A Desperate Call on a January Morning
It was a cold Tuesday morning in January 2024 when our volunteer coordinator received a call about a dog limping on the shoulder of Interstate 35 in Austin, Texas. By the time our rescue team arrived, Bruno, though we didn't know his name yet, had collapsed near the guardrail, exhausted and in pain.
He had been struck by a vehicle and left behind. His right front leg was fractured in two places, and he had several lacerations across his body. Despite his pain, Bruno wagged his tail weakly when our team approached. That moment told us everything we needed to know about this dog's spirit.
Three Months of Recovery
Bruno underwent emergency surgery the same day. Dr. Maria Chen, our partner veterinarian, performed a complex bone repair procedure that lasted four hours. The prognosis was uncertain; there was a chance Bruno might never regain full use of the leg.
He never gave up, not even on his worst days. Every morning he would wag his tail when I walked in, as if to say, I'm still here, I'm still fighting. - Volunteer caregiver Sarah M.
Over the next three months, Bruno underwent intensive physical therapy twice a week. Our volunteers took turns visiting him daily, keeping his spirits high. By April, he was taking his first pain-free steps. By May, he was running in the yard.
Ready for His Forever Home
Bruno is now fully recovered, vaccinated, neutered, and one of the most loving dogs you will ever meet. He is great with children and other dogs, and he absolutely loves fetch and belly rubs.
If you are interested in giving Bruno his forever home, please visit his adoption profile and submit an application. He has been waiting patiently, and he is absolutely worth it.
